The origins of the Festival

The festival has almost six centuries and commemorates the devastation of the island, on June 24, 1169, by Barbarossa. The remote origins, however, are a peasant festival in honor of the Baptist to propitiate the summer harvests.

On the eve's evening the lake is brightly lit. Once with small oil lamps placed in the shells of lake snails, called lumaghitt; today they shell's have been replaced with waxes placed in boats,  balconies of houses and in the village alleys. The idea of lumaghitt comes from the custom of cooking stewed snails with polenta on the eve of St. John.

A grand fireworks display "fires" the island and the night, on the lake illuminated by thousands of floating lumaghitts and packed with boats, speedboats and ferries. The fire and destruction of the island are remembered, illuminating the Zoca de l'oli (the gulf between the island and the mainland) by day.

On Saturday you can witness the explosion of competition and bellwetherism of the coastal municipalities in the unavoidable "Regatta of St. John" reserved for the competition Lucie of the Lario, starting from Ossuccio and arriving at Sala Comacina.

On Sunday, a procession of boats, called lucie, picturesquely decorated and led by boatmen in traditional clothes, brings back to the island the relics of the martyrs of the Pieve of Island; on board authorities, priests and festive people.
